One of the shortest of the genus, humilis is great for erosion control or as a nice, full hedge. A vertical bamboo with small leaves, distinctive because of its short culm internodes (4-6″), and the first few internodes of each branch are hollow. A quick grower, 15-20′ tall, hardy to 0 degrees, it likes half to full day sun. Leaves and culms are olive green. Culms are small in diameter compared to other Phyllostachys, growing to about 1″ diameter. Makes an excellent, fast filling and dense privacy screen.
