Description
Another Chusquea new to the U.S., growing about 25′ tall and 1¾” inches in diameter with exceptionally long branches at 3-4½ feet. This plant is very big with an airy look, a delightful specimen plant but too open for screening. Shoots are pink-red and grow FAST! Culms stay wrapped in their sheaths for a longer time for an interesting look. Works well against a clear backdrop or standalone. Open clumper that “looks” like a runner!
Fun fact: Unlike most other bamboo/grass species, Chusquea genus canes are SOLID all the way through!

I bought a Chusquea Gigantea about 10 yrs. ago in a 3 gallon pot. I have it planted in the ground in Eureka, CA. It is now a 20 ft. clump. I would call this an active clumper. It shoots twice a year and is a beautiful bamboo. It is approx. 20 ft high with 1 1/2 to 2 inch culms. This plant went to seed this yr. 2019 but the plant seems to remain healthy. I have been able to propagate seeds and now have over 140 seedlings in 4 inch pots. I’m enjoying watching the seedlings grow but worried about what I will do with so many plants- I only have 5 acres and 1/2 that is in Redwoods.
