Description
New culms turn red when exposed to sun, fading to a soft orange-yellow with age (canes start bluish-grey and will be darker red to purple as they mature if not exposed to sun.) Very small, delicate leaves that begin reddish and mature to a light green; leaves will curl tightly in extreme temperatures. Grows to 12 feet tall with half-inch culms. Does best in bright, indirect light with some sun on culms for coloration. Not recommended for areas with high heat and humidity. Excellent container specimen.
Fun fact: This bamboo’s regional namesake, Jiuzhaigou, is pronounced “gee-ooh-zye-GOW”. Jiuzhaigou is a nature reserve and national park located in the north of Sichuan province, China. Jiuzhaigou Valley is part of the Min Mountains on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau.
