Description
Especially useful in landscapes where the timber bamboo look is desired, but with less height, this plant gets 2″ in diameter and 25′ tall locally. Air canals in rhizomes and roots make it well adapted for wetter soils. Stiff, tapered, upright culms. Surface of new culms have a fragrant sandalwood scent when rubbed in the warm sun. New shoots are excellent for eating. A strong runner that establishes and grows rapidly. Hardy to -15 degrees. The dark green and wine red colors of the sheaths on the new shoots give this bamboo it’s Latin name; atrovaginata means “dark-sheathed.”
